Common Plumbing Myths – Part 1

Plumbing myths liquid drain cleaners

Ever heard that a lemon peel can clean your garbage disposal, or that liquid drain cleaner is always the best solution?

At Texas James Plumbing, we hear a lot of interesting ideas about home plumbing! We wanted to share a quick reminder that some common "tips" can actually cause more harm than good to your pipes. This is Part 1 of our 10-part series on common plumbing myths!

Myth #1: Store-bought liquid drain cleaners are a quick, safe fix for clogs.

Reality

While they might seem to work initially, these harsh chemical solutions often do more damage than good in the long run. They can corrode your pipes, especially older ones, leading to leaks, bigger blockages, and costly repairs down the road. What's more, if you already have a full clog, using a chemical drain cleaner is often too late and can even make the situation worse by creating a hazardous caustic mixture in your pipes.

Our Recommendation

For existing clogs, it's always best to call a professional plumber. We use safe and effective methods that protect your plumbing system.

But what about preventing clogs? We highly recommend Bio-One, an EPA-approved "drain probiotic" that uses beneficial bacteria to naturally break down organic matter (grease, soap scum, food particles) that builds up in your pipes. It's a fantastic, eco-friendly way to maintain healthy drains and prevent future clogs without harsh chemicals.
